Affiliate Marketers, what you don’t know may be costing you sales, now and for years to come

In the context of my daily activities,  I talk to people involved with affiliate marketing.

Most love the concept, they totally understand it’s possible to earn a healthy income promoting other people’s products and services and to receive a commission for doing so. They can’t be bothered creating their own product to sell, so they are content to promote affiliate links, and not have to worry about order fulfillment and customer service. Most people I talk to, are promoting more then one affiliate program to try and generate additional streams of income.

All good up to this point.

Where the problem starts is when I ask the affiliate marketer a few key questions.

1. What is your own website address?
Not the URL of the affiliate program but your own professional domain based website. For example mine is SandiHunter.com
The answer I hear is most often I don’t have one, I don’t need one, I am promoting the companies website.

Here’s the problem with not having your own domain name

– without your own domain name, you’re promoting others instead of yourself – stifling your own business growth
– without your own domain name, kiss any traffic from Google good-bye! Google LOVES domains, they gobble them up, index the content and BINGO you have your place to call your business. You go from invisible to findable, searchable, REAL.
– without your own domain name you are losing branding, and professionalism and permanence.

Your own domain name means you are the owner of the name, it’s portable, it can grow with you and your business.
At about $10 – $20 a year, it’s justifiable to have more then one domain name for various purposes or businesses.

 2. What about getting leads? 
Where are you getting leads that are actually real people ? Not paid to sign up leads who have no interest in what you have to offer. Every business needs leads and lots of ’em. Don’t think it’s as easy as buying a bunch as you need them. That may work some of the time provided you have a trusted source but the key to profitability for the long term is the ability to generate your own leads, every day.

3. How do you manage your leads?
What’s your system for collection, organization, search, categorization, follow up?   Personal follow up? Automated follow up with software? I hope you are using something! Often I hear that the leads are so few there is not a lot to organize. Yikes! Two problems in one. You’ve got to increase the number of leads, and have a system for organizing those leads once you get them.

4. What kind of system are you using for your marketing?
The answer I hear most often is that they don’t actually have a system or a method. Some simply post links randomly to Facebook, others buy a mailing list, hopeful that it’s actual real people on the list not a harvested list of fake names and email addresses.  Those with deep pockets will buy ads on Google or other providers that target specific locations. In general most people are using what I call the “post and pray method” meaning they post wherever and whenever without a systematic approach and hope they get a buyer.  One marketer thought he would speed things up and bought a blaster software program thinking he would automate his promotion. Guess what? He got his advertising accounts all terminated.      There are no short cuts to success folks, online or offline.

5. How are you generating consistent steady REAL traffic?
Most struggle with this and without quality traffic you better get used to hearing crickets at your website, because you can’t rely on organic traffic or a standard blog to generate consistent traffic from real human eyes.   I had one gentleman brag to me about his high traffic, after analysis, I detected  the traffic to be 100% bogus.  Big numbers make you feel good until you see it’s just a number unless there’s a corresponding sales conversion number.

6. Ok thus is an important one – so listen up – I am always blown over by the response.
The question? What kind of sales closing system do you rely on?
Most people are so stuck on getting leads and traffic, they haven’t had time or the opportunity to even think about offers, or closing sales. It’s like being at the start line and never getting off the blocks to even have a chance of getting in the race, yet alone winning it.

 7. How do you know the best places to advertise? The quality of traffic and the leads.
What about lead tracking, click tracking, data analysis of your traffic and the sources so you know you are getting real leads not paid to click or robotic clicks. Do you guess? Read reviews – they could be fake. Use trial and error? Not all traffic and leads are equal in quality. Advertisers are good at using terms to confuse you,  or using tech methods you don’t understand or aren’t aware of to make you think you are getting something good that simply isn’t.   The only way to understand this is to learn. Some people aren’t willing to do that so sadly will never have any degree of success in earning online.  They don’t want to learn the right way and will keep doing what’s not working, get frustrated, and write off the entire affiliate marketing industry as a scam when they really have been trying to buy success.
